2018 challenge day 5 – How to Stop Worrying and Start Living

About the Book

This book, How to Stop Worrying and Start Living, was written by Dale Carnegie in the 1940s however its revised edition was published on October 5, 2004. The book stands in with about 320 pages.

This Book starts with Dale Carnegie describing his precarious position of being stuck in a job he hated, not having enough money and living in an apartment that was horrible. He then decided to quit his job and become a instructor for adult education classes – however he was paid by attendance so he had to lecture about what his students wanted. It turns out that most of his students want to learn how to stop worrying.

Dale Carnegie divides the book into several sections on how to overcome worry, how to analyse problems, how to break the habit of worrying, how to achieve happiness, conquer worrying, becoming resistant to criticism and finally how to keep positive. Within these sections Dale further divides them into smaller chapters, each one laden with anecdotes, quotes and excerpts from famous writers, philosophers and even the bible to support that chapter’s message.

Key Takeaways and commentary

Dale Carnegie’s steps for reducing stress and worry are actually not very difficult to apply. The only issues comes from whether or not one has the mental discipline to apply these techniques until it becomes habit.

One of the techniques that I loved was: keeping busy. In fact a good amount of stress and worry develops for me when I have little to do in order to occupy my mind – one of the ways I’ve been able to keep myself busy is this reading challenge, reading and of course this blog.

Another one I liked was that I should look at the problem for what it is – if its a small jab or problem, just let it go. Small problems are not worth the effort and mental and physical damage that comes from worrying.

However, regardless of how simple these techniques sound, I honestly have trouble practicing them at times. Eventually I’ll get used to it.
