2018 challenge day 4 – Become a Person of Influence: How to Positively Impact the Lives of Others

About the Book

Written by John C. Maxwell, Becoming a Person of Influence: How to Positively Impact the Lives of Others, has 208 pages and is published by Thomas Nelson Inc on 7/30/06.

In this book John C. Maxwell states that there are four components of being a person of Influence. A person of influence must be a model, must motivate, must mentor and must multiply their influence. With this in mind, he divides the book into a number of chapters that details the sub-components of the four stated earlier.

Model – to be a model a leader must have integrity with people – that is a person must be ethical no matter how small.

Motivate – a leader must motivate by nurturing others, having faith in people, listens to them and understands them.

Mentor – a leader must Enlarge others, helps navigate for others, connects with them and empowers them.

Multiply – leader must teach others to become influencers

Key Takeaways and commentary

According to this book the key takeaways is that one of the first steps in becoming influential is at first becoming someone who is strong, ethical and trustworthy. After that the goal is to understand others and help them grow – as a result a leader or influencer must also teach their mentors to do also become influencers.

When I first decided to read this book for day 4, I was considering doing a comparison with just day 3’s book Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion however I’ve noticed that there are strong parallels with day 1’s book The Charisma Myth: How Anyone Can Master the Art and Science of Personal Magnetism.

Maxwell promotes the liking principle in Cialdini’s book, this is the principle where you are more likely to listen to someone you like. Having all the characteristic promoted by this book should make one a like able person.

In regards to Cabane’s book, Maxwell is promoted a charisma style known as kindness. Kindness charisma is hallmarked by acceptance and nurturing – in fact Maxwell was formerly a Christian Pastor – people in clergy should be accepting an nurturing (although not all are).
